Derby 454 Resquare Procedure 82-95206 |
 |
 |
|
Preparation: For use with ball bar 182-1160
- Verify that probe tip, ballbar spheres, and qualification sphere are clean.
- Allow the machine, as well as the ball bar to sit in a temperature controlled environment for 8 hours.
- Be sure that probe tips and articulating joints are secure and use only 1 probe position, straight down, for the entire procedure.
- When positioning the ballbar, use insulated gloves to minimize heat flow from the operators hands to the ball bar.
Measurement procedure:
- To measure a ballbar requires the measurement of two spheres: Sphere A, Sphere B. To measure a ballbar 2 times requires the measurement of four spheres: Sphere A, Sphere B, Sphere A, Sphere B.
So, when measuring the ballbars 5 times as this procedure requires, a total of 10 spheres will have to be measured. The ballbar orientations are shown in the subsequent pages.
- Be careful not to confuse the radial and tangential bars. Doing so will double the squareness error!
- Taking exactly 16 points, approach perpendicular to the sphere as the approach vectors show below.
- Each sphere must have a form error less than 10 microns. If not, repeat sphere measurement.
- Each of the 5 ballbars must be within 10 microns of each other. If not, repeat all 5 measurements.
- After measuring both bars for a given plane, compute, apply, and check the squareness before moving to the next plane. (Recommended sequence of planes is XY, YZ, ZX)
- Machine is considered acceptable when XY, YZ, & ZX resquares are less than the advertised machine spec (currently 2 arc seconds.)
- Although measurements are only shown to 3 decimal points in the metric system, the calculated averages should be rounded to 4 decimal points.
- After all three planes have been resquared, recheck all 3 axes to be sure that there has been no interaction between the planes.

Finding the Resquare Utility:
- Restart the system (Power off, power on)
- If the language screen appears, select a language and press done.
- At the home screen, note the machine serial number found in the upper left corner of the screen.
- Press the service utilities softkey. (ambulence)
- When prompted, enter the password, followed by the done softkey. (The password is the last 5 digits of the machine serial number, reversed)
- Press the resquare softkey.
Entering the Data:
- Enter the appropriate plane. (Each plane has its own screen)
- Enter the calculated average radial length.
- Enter the calculated average tangential length.
- Press the done softkey to see the summary screen. If the squareness value is less than the machines advertised spec, (currently at 2 arc seconds) then the procedure for that plane has passed.
Otherwise the step must be repeated.
- Press the done softkey again to update the volcomp table.
- Press the done softkey again to save the volcomp to the upper program card. For more about how Derby handles its volcomp, go to the FAQs on the RefleX/Derby User Site.
