In this lab, in addition to qualifying a single, vertical tip, the Brown & Sharpe Reflex "Demo Block" will be aligned and measured. Study the
part print to help identify the following features to me measured:
- the four 12 mm corner holes
- the height on the left side of the block
- the slot on the front of the part
- the 45o angle in the left, rear corner
- the part width (from left to right)
- the cone angle
- the left/front radius
- the depth in the step in the counterbore.
Step 1. Getting Started
- If not currently inserted, insert the RefleX software card into the upper of the two slots.
- Turn on your RefleX controller.
- Select a desired language when prompted, Press the
Done softkey.
When prompted, home the machine by bringing the Z-rail to the upper left corner. Press the Done softkey.
Step 2. Qualify A Probe
- In the Probe Options Menu, press the
Select Probe Type softkey.
For this lab, we will be using a single tip Touch Trigger Probe. Verify the following configuration:
TTP, Qualify, Qualify, Qualify, Qualify, Single
- After the above has been verified, press the
Done button.
When prompted, remove the probe from the Z rail. Place Z-rail on qualification sphere, press the Done button. (Note: If you
have qualified a probe previously, the system will skip this step, along with the next)
When prompted, reinsert the probe back into the Z-rail. Press the Done softkey.
When prompted, begin measuring the qualification sphere. (12 points recommended)
If form error is above .004 mm or .00016 in, remeasure. Otherwise, press the Done softkey to save results.
Step 3: Setting Up the Demo Block
- Position the RefleX Demo Block on the granite such that the slot (located on the top) is toward the front of the machine.
- Using standard Brown & Sharpe clamping equipment, clamp the demo block to the granite.
Step 4: Entering the Measurement Mode
Measurements softkey. Notice that the system is prompting the user to "Measure Any Feature". Note: The first feature
measured will be stored in block 1 of the feature list, located below the machine counters.
Step 5: Executing a Simple Alignment In RefleX, performing a simple alignment is as easy as A, B, C!
- Working Plane:
Take four (or more) points on the top of the part. Press the Done button. Press the
Set Level -Datum A softkey. Pressing the Down Arrow may be necessary first.
Major Axis: After locking the machine's Z axis at an appropriate height, measure a line across the front of the RefleX demo block from left to right. Press the
Set Axis -Datum B softkey.
Measure a line on the left side of the part. Press the Done button.
Press the Relationships softkey. Pressing the Up Arrow
may be necessary first. With the right arrow softkey, scroll to the "Int Pt & Gauge Angle" screen.
Origin: Set the origin by pressing the Set Origin - Datum C.
Note: Check the alignment by moving the tip of the probe to the origin. Verify that the counters, found in the top
left corner of the screen, read approximately 0.000, 0.000, 0.000.Step 6: Tolerancing
- Return to single feature mode by pressing the
Relationships softkey.
Measure the left rear 12 mm hole, taking at least 4 points. Press the Done softkey.
Select the Tolerance softkey. Pressing the Up Arrow
may be necessary first.
Set the format X, Y, and Diameter to Full and the Roundness format to None.
Using the Tolerance Table, located at the end of this work sheet, enter the nominals for the X and Y locations as well as the diameter.
Press the Printersoftkey.
Repeat steps 1-4 to measure the remaining 3 holes. Enter in nominals and tolerances for each.
Step 7: Measure a Height
- Measure a point on the top of the demo block. Press the
Done softkey.
Measure a point on the granite table. Press the Done softkey.
Press the Relationships softkey.
Using the Right Arrow softkey, scroll to the "Dist along Z" screen.
Enter the appropriate nominals and tolerances from the tolerance table.
Press the Printer softkey.
Step 8: Measure a Slot
- Using the
Relationships softkey, toggle to single feature mode.
Measure the first semicircle on the left side of the slot. Press the Done softkey.
Do the same for the right side semicircle.
Select the Relationships softkey and scroll to the "Slot" screen.
Enter the appropriate nominals and tolerances from the tolerance table.
Press the Printer softkey.
Step 9: Measure an Angle
- Using the
Relationships softkey, toggle to single feature mode.
Measure the 45o angle on the left rear of the part by taking taking at least 2 hits. Press the Done softkey.
Scroll to the "Included Angle" screen.
Tolerance the X and Y locations to None. Change the angle format to 'Full' and set appropriate nominal and tolerances.
Press the Printer softkey.
Step 10: Measure a Width between 2 Lines
- Measure a horizontal line along left side of part. Press the
Done softkey.
Do the same on the right side.
Using the Relationships softkey, toggle to two features mode.
Using the Right Arrow scroll to the "Perpendicular Dist & Gage Angle" screen.
Enter appropriate nominals and tolerances from the tolerance table.
Press the Printer softkey.
Step 11: Measure a Cone
- Using the
Relationships softkey, toggle to single feature mode.
Measure the cone located on the left side of the slot. Make sure to take at least 10 points.
Using the tolerance softkey, turn off (tolerance to none) the locations, and diameter. Set an appropriate nominal and tolerances for the angle. (This angle, commonly referred to as
the 'half angle', is the angle between the axis and the wall of the cone.)
Press the Printer softkey.
Step 12: Measure a radius
- Using at least 5 points, measure the front left 1/4 circle. Press the
Done softkey.
Enter appropriate nominals and tolerances.
Press the Printer softkey.
Note: The software will only calculate the diameter, so one must calculate the radius by hand (Diameter/2).). Step 13: Z axis Plane Report
- Take a single point on the top of the demo block. Press the
Done softkey.
Take a single point on the counterbore
Using the Relationships softkey, toggle to two features mode.
Using the Right Arrow scroll to the 'Distance Along Z' screen.
Enter appropriate nominals and tolerances.
Press the Printer softkey.
Question: How could we measure this distance using planes instead of points? Step 14: Create a Digitized Outline
- Select the
Tools softkey. (Often referred to as the utilities softkey)
Use the Down Arrow to go to the second level of tools.
Select the Part Drawing softkey.
Select the Digitize Outline softkey.
Select the Digitize Top View softkey.
When prompted, begin taking many points around the outside edge of the part. Be careful not to let the TTP trigger on any of the clamping hardware.
Step 15: Save a Program
- Select the
Tools softkey.
Use the Down Arrow to go to the second level of tools.
Select the Program Store / Recall softkey.
Press the Save Program softkey.
Enter a numeric program name of your choice. RefleX does not support alphanumeric names.
Step 16: Playback The inspect sequence of lab 1 is now complete.
- Select the
Tools softkey.
Use the Down Arrow to go to the second level of tools.
Select the Playback softkey.
The system is now ready to "play back" your previously measured demo block. The software will guide you through each measurement and apply the appropriate nominals and tolerances
where appropriate. Good luck!
