How to setup Windows95 for a TCP/IP connection with CompuServe.

Adding Dialup Support

  1. Click on Start with the mouse
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Go to Control panels.
  4. Double click Add/Remove Programs.
  5. Click on the tab called "Windows Setup"
  6. Double click on Communications.
  7. If Dialup Networking has a check next to it, then go to Adding TCP/IP
  8. Click on the box next to Dialup Networking so a check mark appears on it.
  9. Click on OK.
  10. Click on OK again.
  11. Your computer is going to start loading the appropriate software. It may ask you to insert your Windows95 CD or diskette.
  12. Now go Start, then Shutdown.
  13. We need to Restart the machine, DO NOT restart in MS-DOS mode.
  14. You have finished the first part of setting up Windows 95 for a Dialup connection.

Adding TCP/IP to the Control Panel

  1. Open the Control Panels
  2. Double Click on Network
  3. If you see something called TCP/IP, then go directly to Creating a Dialup Connection, if not, click on thr Add button.
  4. Double click on Protocol
  5. Click on Microsoft
  6. Double Click on TCP/IP
  7. You should now be back at the main Networking Window. Click on the OK button.  Your computer is going to start loading the necessary drivers.  If the computer asks you for your Windows95 CD or disk, put them in as required.
  8. This is how the network screen should look when you’ve finished. The one that needs to be installed in the TCP/IP protocol and the Dial-Up Adapter.

At this point, your computer is going to ask you whether or not you want to reboot, Click on Yes.


 Creating a Dialup Connection

  1. Double Click on the "My Computer" icon.
  2. Double click on Dialup Networking Icon.
  3. Now, one of two windows will pop up. If a setup wizard appears, ignore the next step.
  4. If the setup wizard didn't pop up, then you will see an icon called Make a New Connection, double click on it.
  5. Now type "CompuServe" in the Box, then click on Next.
  6. Now type the phone number that you will call. This information in provided at the end of this document.
  7. Click on next, then click on finish.

Editing the Dialup Connection

  1. Now, do a right mouse click on the new icon we just created called "CompuServe", then click on Properties.
  2. Now click on Server Type.
  3. The only things that should be checked are Enable Software Compression and TCP/IP. If anything else is checked, uncheck it.
  4. Now click on TCP/IP settings.
  5. Click on "Specify an name server address"
  6. In the Primary DNS, type 192.52.71.5
  7. In the Secondary DNS, type 199.94.215.244
  8. Don't worry about the WINS, just leave it as is.

This is exactly how it should look. Now click on OK three times.

Creating a Shortcut

  1. Now, you should see two icons, one of which is "Make a New Connection" and the other being CompuServe.
  2. Click on "CompuServe" and hold the left mouse button down.
  3. Drag the icons to the desktop to create a short cut.
  4. Click on the OK button after it gives you the warning that it can’t copy the icon.

Connecting to the Internet

  1. Now, you are ready to try your new connection, but first we want to close all the windows that are open, until we just see the Desktop.
  2. On the desktop, you will see something call "Shortcut to CompuServe", double click on that.
  3. Now type in your username and password, and then click on "Connect" and after a few seconds, you should be connected to the Internet.
